The Curacao Gaming Control Board is a name from the past, and the regulator behind it now answers to a different one. The CGA’s own site explains that with the National Ordinance on Games of Chance the board is referred to as the Curaçao Gaming Authority. Read it as a rename on the same regulator, set out in the Curacao casino license page on the regulator and its register.

The Curacao Gaming Control Board and the Curaçao Gaming Authority

Both names point at the foundation the CGA’s About Us page says was incorporated on April 19, 1999. The CGA’s Online Gaming page states that “the GCB will be referred to as the Curaçao Gaming Authority” once the LOK is in force. The same site still carries the old words in places, such as the page titles “About Us - Gaming Control Board” and “Online Gaming - Gaming Control Board”.

What the Gaming Control Board did before the LOK

Before the LOK, online licenses sat under the National Ordinance on Offshore Games of Hazard, the LBH. The CGA says responsibility for licensing and supervision under the LBH moved to the Minister of Finance in 2019. From March 2020 until the LOK was enacted, the CGA licensed the online sector on the Minister’s behalf, and in November 2023 it began the phased reform that prepared the ground.

  2. March 2020: the CGA is tasked with online licensing on the Minister’s behalf.
  3. November 2023: phased reform begins.
  4. 24 December 2024: the LOK takes effect and the regulator is referred to as the Curaçao Gaming Authority, as a more independent organization for online gaming.

GCB Curacao in an operator’s Terms

Searching for “gcb curacao” mostly turns up operator pages, and those pages often keep the old abbreviation. The JILIEVO lobby is one example: its Terms say the company has a gaming license application in progress with the Curaçao Gaming Control Board, and its footer says “pending by the GCB”. Read that as the lobby’s own wording about an application, not as a finding about the register.

To see what the regulator records, take the company name from the Terms and follow the Curacao license check steps in the CGA’s register. The register page itself is headed “License register Curaçao Gaming Authority” and warns that its overviews do not guarantee the current validity of the licenses.

  • The browser-tab titles of several CGA pages still read “Gaming Control Board”.
  • Operators who applied under the earlier regime keep quoting the board by its old name.
  • Search phrases such as “gcb license” follow the old name, so the registers answer under the authority’s heading.

If a page tells you its license comes from “the Gaming Control Board”, the name alone tells you little. The company name, and what the register records against it, tell you more.

FAQ

Is the Curacao Gaming Control Board still a regulator?

The CGA's Online Gaming page says that with the LOK the GCB will be referred to as the Curaçao Gaming Authority. The same regulator carries on under the new name, and its site and register now use it.

Why does the JILIEVO lobby still say Gaming Control Board?

The lobby's Terms and footer use the older name when they describe a license application in progress. Search the CGA's register under the company name rather than the board name.

What does GCB mean in a license?

GCB stands for Gaming Control Board. Older pages write GCB license or GCB Curacao, and they point to the regulator the CGA now describes as the Curaçao Gaming Authority.
